Instant Mold Spare Parts and Junk

While waiting for some paint to dry on Woof and Orboo, I made a mold of a door and grill/radiator from a Rim Runner, and a couple more Burrower heads; then, cast them in GS. Over a time and half a time I'll get a nice stack of spare parts, junk, and critters to clutter up the scenarios settings'.

My molds are coming out a bit more sharply defined now that I am allowing the molding compound to soften more in hot water before applying it to a form. In my case, practice is making things better.

    1. I think I'll scratch build a hand held weapon or two and use Instant Mold to make some molds for GS copies for leaning against trees, placed in vehicles, etc.

    1. Hi, Sam: Thanks, Sir. Your imagination is big enough to find a use for this stuff. Just lean back, close your eyes, and meditate on how it can be used. See, that was not too hard was it?!

  6. FYI everyone, as much as I love my Instant Mold (polycaprolactone), it's apparently cheaper to get it online under other trade names. "Polymorph" and "Shapelock" seem to come up when I search, and are significantly cheaper than IM.

Instant Mold is best for duplicating textures, IMO. I've used it to apply the texture of a rock to a mini base, and I've also lifted artificial textures from various items, and turned them into sci-fi flooring etc. You can also sculpt a shoulder pad, emblem in low-relief etc. and make a bunch of copies easily with greenstuff. It's kind of hard to copy fully 3-D items with it.

    1. Hi, Allison. Thanks for the input. "Less costly is the modeler's motto." I definitely agree that this stuff is great for texture replication, and for capturing flat or low relief objects: such as doors, windows, Burrower heads, Martian foot prints, etc. I'm looking forward to building some Jordan vehicle plastic models in a couple of months; and IM will be there with me to help make a bunch of spare and junk parts for junk piles, pickup truck beds (which are universally known to haul around useless parts for years and years), the bottom of creeks--stuck in the green oozy mud, and the list goes on!

    2. I thought the modeler's motto was "I'll come to bed soon, honey"?

    3. True. But our mottoes are like pearls strung together in perfect harmony. One may shine forth more than another as the circumstances dictate. Our Motto Volume covers just about every situation known to the modeler.

      "We Motto with the flow!"

  7. Nice work! I got mine from Amazon under the name "Oyumaru" It is the same product although mine was in a variety of bright colors.. Quite useful for remembering which mould is which!

    1. I've seen the colored stuff online at Amazon. But I can get it in Orange County when go up there for a day of gaming and kibitzing. And agree the differing colors would help sorting out what's what.

    1. Hi, Rodger. Here where I live in the USA this stuff costs less than 4 bottles of paint by just a little bit. Plus, as I see it, it's a one time purchase because you can use it over and over and over...
